What is your full name?
Aleksandra Wojda

Do you have a nickname?
Most people call me Aleks, a few of my closer friends have recently started calling me A-Train for no reason that I know.

Where do you currently live?
Evanston, IL

Where were you born?
Pretoria, South Africa

What is your hometown?
I grew up on the South Side of Chicago from the time I was about 2 ½ years old till I was about 12 years old and than my family moved to a suburb called Willow Springs IL, where my home is now.

How old are you?
22 years old

What is your birth date?
10/08/1983

Are you in school?
I am done with all of my schoolwork as of June 5th 2006, and my graduation date is set to be June 17th 2006 so I will not be walking with my classmates. I am graduating from Northwestern University with a double major in Communication Sciences and Disorders and International Studies.

Do you have a job?
I have worked as a dance teacher for the past two years at Inspire School of Dance in Plainfield, IL.

How old were you when you started to dance?
My mom put me into dance classes when I was five years old. She wanted me to have more playmates as well as an activity outside of school.

Do you have any formal dance training?
Northwestern University 2005-2006: Ballet with Laura Wade and Jazz with Jeff Hancock.
Alvin Ailey Summer Intensive 2005 (while in NYC, I took class at BDC and Steps)
Gus Giordano Dance Center Evanston, IL: September 2002 - Present
Stage Door Dance Academy Palos Park, IL: August 1998 – June 2002 (I competed with the studio company and took all the required dance classes, ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, and tap on and off).
Fauborg School of Dance - month long ballet intensive: July 2001
Kathleen’s Dance Asylum Chicago, IL: September 1989 – June 1998

If you had to categorize your dance style, what would it be (hip hop, ballet, tap etc…)?
I would categorize myself as a contemporary dancer. I have trained in ballet, modern, and jazz the most. The combination of those three has allowed me to be versatile and creative within my movement.

What other talents/hobbies do you have?
I enjoy hanging out with my friends at the beach, movies, their houses, basically anywhere. I love my friends, they help to keep me sane. I also love to read novels, go rollerblading, and bike riding.

Who is your favorite professional dancer?
Lizzie Mackenzie (River North Chicago), Eugene Peabody, Ruth Sherman (Giordano Jazz Dance), Eddy Ocampo, Mark Meismer,

Have you performed in musical theater or in public functions as a dancer?
I did some musicals in high school, and I have been on many public stages as a dancer.

What would you like to see happen to you as a result of the show?
As a result of this show, I would love to see my dance career take off and blossom with the introduction of new styles and choreographers. I am so excited to be working with all of these new talented choreographers, and dancing with such an extraordinary group of dancers. I think this will be an amazingly life-changing and positive experience for me as a dancer and a person. I hope that this experience will lead me to more dance performance opportunities.

Where would you like to be in 10 years and what would you like to be doing?
In ten years, I hope that I will be teaching dance and spreading my knowledge and love of dance, if not still performing. I would also like to pursue a graduate degree eventually; however I don’t know in what field. Possibly Speech-Language Pathology, or Physical Therapy, or Arts Administration; the possibilities are endless. I also hope to be married with a child.

What has been your most memorable dance experience?
My most memorable dance experience to date has been my experience with So You Think You Can Dance. It has been the craziest, most emotional, and satisfying experience I have had in awhile. I loved learning all the new different styles, and I cannot wait to learn more. Before So You Think You Can Dance, my most memorable experience was being able to learn the original choreography of Sing, Sing, Sing, a repertory piece from the Giordano Jazz Dance Company as an assistant at the Giordano Jazz Dance Congress in Costa Rica. The reason why it was so special was because we got to learn it and perform it right in front of Mr. Gus Giordano himself, who choreographed the piece. I remember being so privileged to be in his presence because he is a huge part of what jazz dance has become now. I respect his generation of jazz dancers so much because they pioneered a style that people did not understand, but has now paved the way for a great growth of dance.
